Miracle Linux Readies "Samba 3.0" Open Source Software to Go Global
- Sponsored by the Information-Technology Promotion Agency (IPA) under its Infrastructure Development for Open-Source Software Project -

Tokyo, Japan, November 11, 2003 -- Miracle Linux Corporation announces that it has launched a project to internationalize Samba 3.0, open-source software with a file server function. The project is backed by the Infrastructure Development for Open-Source Software Project, an initiative implemented by the Information-Technology Promotion Agency (IPA), and is scheduled to be completed by March 2004.

Samba is an open-source software suite that enables a Linux server to function as a file server for client PCs running Windows software and is available on the Miracle Linux Server OS. It has the essential capability to integrate two operating systems, allowing for maximum utilization in an environment where both Windows software and a Linux server are used. With more and more systems being run on a Linux server, an increasing number of Samba file server systems have been rapidly introduced due to a growing interest in improved cost efficiency.

This project aims to promote globalization of Samba 3.0, which was officially released on September 24, 2003, and to remedy any problems that may arise with the introduction of Samba 3.0 to the Japanese environment. With Samba 3.0, offices that use an existing Windows network and public offices and educational institutions that depend on large-scale file sharing can replace their Windows server with a Linux server with Samba and benefit from its higher cost performance and security. All the fruits of this project will be developed and distributed under the GPL and made available to the public through mailing lists and other sources.

Project Outline
Samba3.0

Miracle Linux has been actively participating in the development of the Samba Japanese version and was among the first to offer products. It also offers specialized support and consulting services. Developments from this project will be incorporated in Miracle Linux's next version. Miracle Linux will continue to offer a more secure environment for users of Linux and Samba.

Endorsement

Samba Users Group Japan welcomes the internationalization project for Samba 3.0. I hope that promoting the internationalization of Samba 3.0 will benefit all developers and users of Samba both in Japan and throughout the world and lead to increased use of open-source software such as Samba. Samba Users Group Japan has worked on development and dissemination of the Samba Japanese version and will continue to strive for further development and dissemination of an internationalized Samba 3.0.

Toshiya Ota
Representative Secretary
Samba Users Group Japan

Miracle Linux was quick to recognize that Samba/Linux would play an important role in enterprise computing and has actively participated in open-source community initiatives. The Samba 3.0 internationalization project has significant importance to the progress of Linux and should provide a spark for promoting implementation of Linux in backbone systems.
